Loitering munition attack

 

total crew of 27 comprising romanian, russian, chinese, ukranian, filipino, georgian, and india nationals,, This liberia flag ship under zodiac maritime,

 

 


ship  Pacific zircon vessel was attacked by loitering munition (unmanned explosive drone) on 15 November 2022 in off coast of oman, Loitering munition was carrying explosives and hit the starboard side of the stern part of the vessel. this vessel is liberia flag vessel, belong to eastern pacific shipping company.

 


Loitering munition is new threat to shipping industry, This will continue in foreseeable future.

 

Loitering munition is the weapon system in which drone loiters around target area for some time searches for targets, it will attack once target located.

 

Marine industry faced several attack until now.

 

Loitering munition has the following features

1. Low altititud flight profile

2.propeller made of wood

3.flying range is 1800 nautical miles

4.MD 550 engine sound like motor cycle

5.Forward part have sensor along with the warhead

6.fuel tank and engine

 


What can mariner do to prevent the LM attack ?

 

The company has to revised policy of putting off AIS , Because putting off may make more difficulty for drone to detect the vessel. it is also not guarantee too that putting off AIS may save our ship because MT Mercer street AIS was on, It was attacked, But MV Pacific zircon's AIS was off that also was attacked.

 

changing the course lane provide united  mitigation capablities may save the ship because drone have round pathway as shown, so best manoeuvering disturb the final LM guidance.

 

Keeping all round good lookout and identifying at earliest and report to appropriate authority will be the best practise.

 

Safety muster point should be considered above water line

 

Commercial available solution such as counter drone system may jam or spoofing the signal

MEG 4 was published in 2018, and it contains a number of important requirements that most of us are still unaware of. Specifically, SDMBL, LDBF, TDBF, and WLL.
